Accommodation: Radisson Blu, Frankland Lane, Durham DH1 5TA
The Master looks forward to welcoming Liverymen, Freemen and Guests to his home City of Durham, where he has planned a varied and fascinating weekend. There will also be time to explore on your own.
The Durham city skyline is one of the most stunning city panoramas in Europe, and is dominated by the majestic Durham Cathedral and the adjacent Durham Castle. The city has a wonderful timeless quality with rowing on the River Wear, relaxing riverside walks, and a vibrant contemporary culture with superb cafés, artisan workshops, boutiques, galleries and museums.
The Weekend includes:
- A spectacular open-air live show in Bishop Auckland to experience ‘Kynren – an epic tale of England’. It is a mesmerising live action extravaganza that takes you on a whistle stop tour of 2,000 years of history, myth and legend. The 90-minute show begins at sunset and ends in starlight and is set to an evocative original soundtrack by award-winning composer Nathan Stornetta.
- A visit to Beamish – The living museum of the north. This is no ordinary museum, but a 350-acre site where you can explore ‘hands-on history’, with everything from steam trains and collieries to gardens and a medieval church.
- Black tie dinner at Durham Cathedral where members and guests will be treated to a guided tour after the Cathedral has closed to the public. We will then have our reception drinks in the Undercroft foyer just off the medieval cloister, before proceeding to a three-course dinner with wines in the Undercroft restaurant.
