York YO1 6GD
York is the choice for the Master’s weekend in June because Fiona is a Trustee of the wonderful National Railway Museum. It also has an exquisite Mansion House packed with glorious historical sights, all within walking distance or a very short taxi ride from the hotel. It is also York Races weekend and we are all invited to the Races in luxurious facilities on the Saturday.
The weekend is open to Liverymen, Freemen, partners and guests and a full breakdown is below:
Accommodation: The Grand Hotel, Station Rise, York YO1 6GD – https://www.thegrandyork.co.uk. The hotel is a refurbished former headquarters of the North Eastern Railways.
Friday 12th June – two options:
1. Early afternoon
- York Chocolate Story, booked for 25 people starting at 2pm OR
- York Minster – a guided tour starting at 2.30pm
2. Late afternoon
- City Cruise starting at 4.10pm from the Lendl Bridge jetty. The time may be tweaked slightly on the day.
- York Mansion House with a tour starting at 4.30pm, followed by tea in their Entertainment Room
Friday will finish with an evening dinner in the Old Board Room at the Grand Hotel at 7.15pm for 7.45pm. The guest speaker, Frank Paterson, a distinguished former Director of North Eastern Railways, is living history. He will tell us his railway stories and set us up for the National Railway Museum Visit on Sunday.
Saturday 13th June:
York Races through the generosity of one of our Liveryman who is providing access to the Committee Room box. His generosity includes an initial champagne reception, lunch and team and transport for the day. We start in the Old Board Room in the hotel at 10.45am for the champagne reception, before heading by coach at 11.30am to the Races. The box includes a lunch buffet and subsequently tea. A tipster will guide us on the best bets!
In return of the kindness of our Liveryman, we are each asked to make a donation to the Company’s Charity. Given the generosity and cost of a day at the Races, the Master suggest £75 per head.
Note: the dress code for the Races is lounge suit with tie for gentlemen and formal day dress, with hats encouraged, for ladies.
The coach leaves the Races at 5.00pm so we can get back to the hotel in time to get ready for dinner at Berden Hall, near York Minster, starting with a drinks reception at 7.30pm. The guest of honour in the evening will be the Lord Mayor of York.
Note: the dress code for the dinner is jacket with WCoBM or other suitable tie for the gentlemen, and the ladies will know what to wear! It is not black tie, and we are not obliged to be as formal as at the Races.
Saturday 14th June:
The weekend ends with a visit to the National Railway Museum, home to iconic locomotives and an unrivalled collection of engineering brilliance spanning 200 years! Starting at 10.30am, the morning will include a buffet lunch, finishing at 2.30pm.
Comfortable clothes and shoes should be worn.
Costs and payment details:

When you have made your hotel booking, either send a cheque to cover the cost or, preferably make a BACS transfer to WCoBM.
